Private Candidates
Southborough High School welcomes private candidates for GCE and GCSE exams with all the main exam boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) and for most subjects (although some subjects are not available to private candidates). Where coursework is involved we expect private candidates to make their own arrangements to have their work authenticated.
This is often easiest to do through a distance learning organisation (such as Oxford Open Learning or the National Extension College, both of which we have dealt with in the past). Candidates for a modern foreign language would also have to make arrangements for any speaking tests involved. We cannot arrange or provide laboratory facilities for science practical exams.
In order to enter you as a private candidate we need the following information:
- Full name and address
- Name you would like on your exam certificate (if different from above)
- Contact telephone number (and email, if available)
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Whether you are studying with a distance learning organisation
- Exam board
- Session of intended exam (i.e. March 2010 or Summer 2010)
- Details of the subject(s), including the tier of entry for GCSE (e.g. Foundation, Higher), the unit code(s), any option code(s) etc.
- The certification / subject award / ‘cash-in’ code(s) where appropriate (i.e. if you wish to ‘cash-in’ the units to obtain an overall grade and certificate). This applies mainly to AS and A level exams
- Results of any previous examinations taken in the subject for which you wish to be entered, plus the name and centre number of the centre where they were taken
- Your 13 character Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI number) if one has previously been issued. (This may be found on the Candidate Statement of Entry or Statement of Results from previous exams. Or you may need to contact the centre where you took the exams).
The cost will be approximately £60 for single GCSE entries, £50 for the first GCE unit in an exam session and £40 for all subsequent GCE units in the same session (though this will vary according to the exam board and subject). This has to be paid when the entries are made. There may be additional charges to cover invigilation costs. Please also note that if for any reason (including ill health) a candidate is unable to sit an exam we will not be able to make any refunds.
The deadline for March entries is 21st January. The deadline for summer entries for GCE is 19th February and GCE AS and A Levels is 19th March. No entries will be accepted after these dates.
Once entered you will need to provide a piece of photographic identification (such as a driving licence or passport) before you sit the exam.
Further information about entering as a private candidate can be found in the ‘Supplementary Guidance for Private Candidates’ (from the AQA exam board) and Edexcel’s ‘Private Candidate Handbook’. Both can be found on the relevant exam board’s website.
For further information please email Peter Stainton (Exams Officer) at pstain1@rbksch.org or ‘phone 020 8391 4324 ex. 37.

An excellent induction programme for new pupils helps identify their learning needs and helps them settle into school life.
