Mathematics
At Southborough High, pupils are put in Maths sets from the beginning of year 7. Opportunities arise regularly for them to change sets if they perform well or need to have more consolidation of work.
We allow our most able students to reach their fullest potential. Set 1 Year 10 boys take GCSE Maths and GCSE statistics a year early before taking AS Maths in Year 11. Set 2 boys also take GCSE Statistics in Year 10 and GCSE Maths in Year 11. The examining board we use is Edexcel.
In Key Stage 5 we offer both A Level Maths and Further Maths, using the Edexcel examining board. Modules include Core Maths, Decision Maths, Statistics and Mechanics. Every teacher for A level is experienced at teaching this level and has a good track record. When compared with similar schools our A level results are above average, as demonstrated by the ALPS value-added measuring tool. Take up for A level is very strong and we frequently have two classes running of about 15 each.
For further enrichment some of our students take the national Maths Challenge in years 7, 8, 9 and 10, gaining Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates. At Southborough, the Maths department takes our students as far as they'll go.
