MFL - Modern Foreign Languages
Why Learn a Language?
John Cleese: “Learning a language makes our minds stronger and more flexible. Actually using it gives us an entirely new experience of the world”.
Sir Alex Ferguson CBE: “All I can advise, is that you keep working at your languages. Foreign languages are exciting and interesting - keep up the hard work, it will be worth it in the end”.
Gary Lineker: “Modern languages prepare you for modern life. As the world gets smaller, there's never been a better opportunity to get into languages. I've really enjoyed learning Spanish and Japanese. Getting to grips with a new language can be great fun, and you learn so much about other people and what makes them tick”.

Languages at Southborough
At Southborough High School, we believe strongly in the need to study a language in terms of preparing our students for a 21st century globalised society. The emphasis of teaching is on making sure that students are exposed to and use the language studied as often as possible. We aim to do this in a supportive environment, where all students are challenged and enjoy their lessons.
We currently offer students the choice of studying French or Spanish, students then continue to study the language until the end of Key Stage 3, whereupon they may choose either language as an option at GCSE. Students may then continue to study French or Spanish at A-Level.
Topics
studied at Key Stage 3 include;
- How to introduce and describe yourself and others
- Describing where you live
- Talking about the sports and hobbies
- How to make arrangements to go out
- Ordering and buying food
- Describing and planning holidays
- Describing illnesses
- Talking about healthy eating
In addition, we also aim to give students a rudimentary understanding of the geography and culture of the countries that they study. Particular emphasis is placed on these strands by the homework projects that students complete throughout the year in languages.
Languages at GCSE/Post-16
We aim to provide our GCSE students with the following skills;
- To develop an understanding of speaking and writing
- To communicate effectively in the foreign language
- Develop knowledge of the grammar of the foreign language
- Learn about other countries and cultures
