Learning Support
At Southborough we strive to create an inclusive environment where all pupils
are valued equally and have the right to education.
Here at Southborough we cater to the needs of all students with various needs including:
- English as an Additional language
- Refugee, traveler and asylum seekers
- Medical needs
- Emotional, social and behavioural difficulties
- Special educational needs (SEN)
- Gifted and Talented
The principle which underlines the policy is that, ‘All pupils share the right to a broad and balanced curriculum.’ We understand the importance of a tailored educational programme and delivered in a way which appeals to boys and especially their needs.
Our last OFSTED Inspection remarked that the work done by the department was often very good and at times outstanding. We achieved this success through a combination of factors:
- A commitment to the rights of each individual to access and progress through the National Curriculum
- A commitment to the rights of each child to have a smooth transition between the primary and secondary phase
- We listen to boys and parents regarding their Learning Support needs
- Reading Recovery Programme where some pupils reading ages increase by as much as 2 years in 6 months
- Support for pupils outside of school time via our Homework, breakfast and Lunchtime Clubs
- Differentiated class work and homework
- Highly qualified and experienced staff (qualifications include Masters Degree in SEN, HLTA)
- High levels of consultation with primary schools and parents prior to entry to Southborough
- Close liaison with support agencies in the Borough i.e. Connexions, EWO
- Philosophy which understands that students needs to develop self esteem through various sporting and extra curricular activities like canoeing, gardening and water skiing
- Delivery of emotional literacy programme for those students with difficulties resulting in the students putting on a staff morning tea party
- Offering support groups for literacy, numeracy, coursework catch up and an alternative GCSE subject in Key Stage 4 - ASDAN

Our son has felt at home since he joined the school. The support you've offered him has been fantastic.
