Welcome to Southborough High School Sixth Form

Sixth Form Prospectus

Our Aims

Each student comes to Southborough Sixth Form with individual ambitions. Our role as a team is to support you in those ambitions and to help each of you achieve your chosen goals. We will support and mentor you throughout your time here and offer advice and guidance on a range of academic and post 16 issues, including university applications and employment options.

Ultimately, we want each of you to:

  • Achieve your true potential
  • Be well prepared for life beyond the Sixth Form, be that university, work or elsewhere
  • Feel part of the school community by participating in a wide range of activities
  • Become responsible young adults and positive role models for younger students and the wider community

We aim to provide an excellent learning environment for Post 16 studies and are confident that we can support you to achieve the best of your abilities.

We hope you enjoy your time here at Southborough Sixth Form and that you make the most of the opportunities on offer to you. We are always on hand to deal with any queries and look forward to working with you all over the coming year.

The Sixth Form Team

Head of Sixth Form: Mr M Conroy - mconro1@rbksch.org
Deputy Head: Mr B Burns - bburns1@rbksch.org
Sixth Form Support: Mrs J Dixon - jdixon7@rbksch.org 0208 391 4324 x 33

Our Expectations

We strive to ensure that all students at Southborough Sixth Form are treated as young adults, but we do have rules and expect all students to support and adhere to the following expectations:

  1. Attendance: Attendance is the number one thing that affects your final exam results. Sixth Form students are expected to attend registration, all lessons and assemblies Punctuality and attendance to lessons and registration will be monitored: Acceptable explanations for absence include:

    Illness - Extreme family emergency

    Driving test (not lessons)

Medical or dental treatment (not check-ups)

Visits to or interviews at colleges/universities – students are entitled to visit up to a maximum of four universities on Open Days, without incurring an ‘absence’.

Sixth Form students should sign in and out all day with Mrs Dixon when leaving and re-entering the building.

The main school office should be notified by a parent if a student is absent for medical/personal reasons.  A phone call should be made to Mrs Dixon on 0208 391 4324 x 33 before 9.00am.

Tutors will follow up absence in the first instance, but persistent absences will be followed up by the Sixth Form Team.  Constant offenders will be placed on report with their tutors.  Persistent offenders will receive a final warning and placed on report with the Head of Sixth Form.  This may result in their position in Sixth Form being terminated to the discretion of the Head of Sixth Form.

  2. Code of Dress: The code of dress for Southborough Sixth Form is smart. Our expectation is that all students wear a shirt, trousers and shoes (no trainers). Hats are not relevant to the working environment nor are t-shirts and shorts with inappropriate messages or advertising ie. football shirts. Students wearing these items will be sent home immediately. If any member of staff feels you are not adhering to the Code of Dress, you will be sent home immediately to rectify the issue.
  3. Lesson Attendance: Students should attend all subject lessons during the day/week unless medically unfit for school or the student has been excused by his tutor for valid medical or personal reasons. Driving lessons should not be booked during timetabled lesson time. Only driving tests are allowed during the school day.
  4. Behaviour/Conduct: Sixth Form students are expected to provide a positive role model to younger students in the school. This should be reflected in the way they respond to one another, to adults and to the younger students. All the positive behaviour exhibited by Sixth Form students will impact upon the behaviour and demeanour of younger boys. Teaching and non-teaching staff should expect a Sixth Form student to display the same level of courtesy to them that the adults display to one another.
  5. The Common Room: This is a social area for all members of the Sixth Form to enjoy. Please maintain a calm and welcoming attitude. No food is allowed – please place all litter in the bins provided and note that if the common room is kept in a poor state it will be closed.
  6. Quiet Common Room/LRC: This is a quiet area for all members of the Sixth Form to make use of. No food is allowed, and again if kept in a poor state will be closed. The study room offers a great opportunity for students to use their free periods to do some extra work! Students are able to make use of the school’s Learning Resource Centre for internet access.
  7. Car Park: Students are NOT ALLOWED to bring their vehicles on the school site due to limited space; it is possible to park in the roads nearby. However, students may bring their mopeds to school and park them in the designated area. The school accepts no responsibility for any vehicles brought on the school site.
  8. Visitors:  For security reasons students are not allowed to invite friends who do not attend Southborough High School onto the premises.
