Promoting a love of problem solving

LogoThe Junior Mathematical Challenge – a national competition run by The UK Maths Trust -  is a 60-minute, multiple-choice Challenge that students from all secondary schools across the UK can take part in. It encourages mathematical reasoningprecision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

This year Southborough High School entered all Year 7 and the majority of Y8 students into the competition and we were impressed with the number of students who gained a special award - Gold (only 8-9% of entrants awarded this), Silver (15-16%), Bronze (25%) and Participation (50%).  - especially as this was a nationwide competition.

Southborough results were as follows:

  Y8 Y7
Entries: 90 141
Gold:  2 0
Silver:    11 10
Bronze:  31 33

Img 0940Year 8 students Alfie L and Jesse B both achieved the prestigious Gold Certificate and Jesse has been invited to compete in the next level of the UK competition  – Kangaroo Junior Challenge – quite a feat given that only the top 10,000 students in the UK get invited!

Well done to all our students who took part in the competition and a special congratulations to both Jesse and Alfie for being such Maths superstars!!!
