Welcome to our new Year 7s!

As a relatively small school, one of our biggest strengths is the positive relationships that we develop between staff and our students. No student is overlooked and every student matters. And when – five to seven years later – our students leave Southborough to move on to university or the workplace, they leave as well educated, well rounded, confident and happy young men.

At Southborough, we understand that the sooner our students get the opportunity to meet staff, other students and get to know their new surroundings, the quicker they settle in and feel happy. And evidence clearly demonstrates that happy, settled students are more likely to do well on both an academic and personal level.

On Saturday, the school hosted ‘Friendship Day’, a particularly special date in the school diary that is designed to make new students who are due to join us in September – along with their parents – feel, well, at home at Southborough!

Over 100 families were given a warm welcome by Headteacher Mr Smith and Assistant Headteacher Ms Linney and were soon involved in a wide range of fun and innovative activities based around History, Maths, Spanish, Sport, Food Technology, Media, Geography, IT, Drama and Science.

A range of light refreshments was provided for guests, and they were given the opportunity to chat to other families and make new friends. A great number of our own students – including cadets, sportsmen, musicians, Young Enterprise, classroom volunteers and our Junior Leadership Team - were all on hand to show families around and speak to visitors about extra- curricular clubs and other activities that take place at Southborough. They were all amazing ambassadors for the school!

We were also lucky enough to have key members of our P.T.A (Parent & Teacher Association) present to speak to new parents, and raise funds thjrough a sale of pre-loved uniform items.

New parents also got the chance to find out more about our future plans and ambitions for the school, including the development and building of a new Sports Arena and Sixth Form Centre.

By all accounts, new students and their parents enjoyed the morning immensely and left happy, knowing that they had made the right decision in choosing Southborough!

Many thanks must go to Ms Linney for leading on and organising such a worthwhile event, together with all those members of staff and students who contributed their time generously. A special thanks must also be paid to our P.T.A members for their valued support, together with our office staff, who were responsible for the logistical side of things, ensuring that everything ran smoothly for our valued guests on the day itself.
