Last week, the spotlight shone on our Year 10 GCSE Drama students as they delivered two outstanding performances of an original production: The Wizard of Nodnol. Although the title nods to a certain yellow brick road, this was no straight retelling. Instead, the boys presented a bold, contemporary reimagining that spoke directly to the realities facing young men today—friendship, identity, and the courage it takes to be heard.

A new script, written with students

Loosely inspired by The Wizard of Oz, the show featured a brand-new script by our Head of Drama, Ms Brown, developed in creative collaboration with students Ethan P and Igor V. Together they kept the storytelling shape of the original, but adapted it for an all-male cast and a clear message: resilience matters, and self-worth is something you build—often with the help of others.

The story follows Jamie, a student worn down by bullying, whose life is changed by a serious road accident. He wakes in a surreal hospital in ‘Nodnol’—London spelt backwards—and begins a metaphorical journey through an inverted cityscape. Along the way he meets characters who each offer a gift; together, these tokens form the amulet he needs to find his way back to reality.

The emotional heart of the piece lands in the Wizard’s final words to Jamie: “Friendship. Bravery. Voice. Heart. And choice.” They are not magic tricks, but the essential parts of Jamie’s identity—collected, tested, and ultimately reclaimed.

Teamwork on stage—and behind the scenes

The production was a genuine team effort. Alongside confident performances, the technical work was polished and purposeful. Ethan P not only helped shape the script, but also composed and produced the original music that underscored key moments with real atmosphere. From the technical booth, Matthew K programmed and ran an ambitious lighting design that transformed the space and helped bring Nodnol’s strange, inverted world to life.

With striking scenery and bespoke props completing the picture, the show became a true multi-sensory experience. Ms Brown expressed her sincere thanks to Ethan and Matthew for their leadership in building and running the show’s technical framework.

Pride, passion, and progress

Reflecting on the performances, Ms Brown said: “I am extremely proud and grateful to have been able to do this with such an amazing cast and crew. Supporting students as they pursue their passions is a privilege; it reminds me why creativity matters so much in school.”

Jack N, who gave a powerful performance as Jamie, added: “Being part of this production was a tremendously fun experience. We developed new skills and brought these characters to life. On behalf of the team, thank you to Ms Brown for her support and belief in us!”
