Charity work and community outreach plays a big part in Southborough’s Culture
It goes without saying that charity and community outreach in schools are crucial for fostering a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and well-rounded development in students. These initiatives extend learning beyond the classroom, offering opportunities for students to engage with and contribute to their local and global communities. Charity work and community engagement also help students develop valuable life skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, while potentially uncovering hidden talents and career interests.
Here at Southborough, we engage in a wide breadth of activities that support and bring our community together, and we also recognise that social interaction across generations brings incredible benefits for everyone involved. Working closely with the Royal Star & Garter Residential Home for ex-servicemen and women in Surbiton and hosting a special annual Christmas Tea Party for local Senior Citizens and grandparents allows our students to spend quality time with their elders. We also collected food and provisions at Christmas for The Kingston Pantry, helping people and families ‘in need’ living in the local community.
Raising both awareness and funds for Movember (testicular cancer) was especially important in a boys school such as Southborough and a sponsored walk raising thousands of pounds for the Children’s Trust, Tadworth provided a more personal ‘thank you’ to the work they do for children with acquired brain injuries, given their superb work on the ongoing road to recovery of one of our current students.
Indeed, pouring ‘physical energy’ into raising money for charity is something we do particularly well. A 10k Winter Walk back in January by our Young Leaders raised money thousands for the Royal Star and Garter, a member of staff – P.E Teacher Mr Taylor – helped raise over a thousand pounds for Cecily’s Fund by running the London Marathon and a good number of staff and Sixth Formers - led by Headteacher Mr Smith - will be running the London 10k later on in July to further support the charity. Staff will also be taking part in a Dragon Boat Race shortly for Kingston Churches Action for Homelessness. (KCAH) Links can be found for both below.
Our Young Leaders students have also raised several thousand pounds for Great Ormond Street Hospital by organising and hosting range of quiz nights, raffles and other activities.
In all, the students, staff and parents of Southborough have, throughout the year, worked closely to give back to the most vulnerable in the local community and support a wide variety of charities that do both vital and wonderous work for both the young and elderly.
Thank you!
We are immensely proud of all the good work that we, as a school community, do for our chosen charities and thank you for the support you continue to give in our mission to ‘give back’ and help grow and nurture young men who fully understand the importance of social responsibility.
