Prizegiving Evening 2025

Prizegiving Evening 2025

It matters little whether we are young or old: every one of us thrives when our efforts are recognised. Genuine praise strengthens relationships, inspires individuals to aim higher and fosters a culture where people are motivated to meet – and exceed – expectations. It builds confidence, enhances performance and creates a positive, purposeful working environment.

At Southborough, we place great value on acknowledging students who apply themselves and achieve highly. Praise plays a vital role in shaping a young person’s self-belief and sense of identity; it strengthens the connection between students and staff and encourages a shared commitment to excellence. Although regular praise, guidance and support are firmly embedded in the daily life of our school, we also take pride in going further by hosting a landmark annual event dedicated entirely to celebrating our students’ achievements.

Last Wednesday, Southborough proudly welcomed families, carers and staff to our much-loved Prizegiving Evening. The hall was filled to capacity as the community gathered to applaud students receiving awards for endeavour, academic excellence, subject achievement, extra-curricular commitment, community service, 100% attendance and outstanding performance at GCSE and GCE.

Warmly compered by Deputy Headteacher Mr Burns, the ceremony saw awards presented by Headteacher Mr Smith, Councillor Liz Green, CEO of Learning Partners Jack Mayhew and Mrs C. Henderson, Chair of Governors.

A musical interlude of exceptional quality followed, with Year 10 student, Ethan P, performing Hans Zimmer’s Cornfield Chase on the piano with remarkable precision. What made this moment truly extraordinary was that Ethan had only begun teaching himself the piano six weeks earlier - an astonishing accomplishment and a testament to his dedication.

In total, around 140 students were formally recognised for their efforts and achievements across the year. Among the standout honours were the Andy Taylor Memorial Award presented to Vicknasayi T, the George Pantziarka Memorial Award awarded to Micky W, and the CCF Cadet of the Year Award received by George D.

The evening also offered a fitting occasion to acknowledge the exceptional service of two long-standing governors, Mr Robin Kent (10 years) and Mr Tim Neale (7 years), both of whom step down at the end of the year. Chair of Governors Mrs Henderson presented each with a personal token of appreciation in recognition of their invaluable contribution to the Governing Body.

Naturally, an event of this scale does not come together without considerable effort. Sincere thanks must go to Mr Burns, whose meticulous organisation and poised hosting were central to the evening’s success. Our gratitude also extends to Mrs Humphreys, Mrs Harris and PTA member and parent Mrs Lelliot for their invaluable support in ensuring the evening ran seamlessly.

Here's to another successful year ahead!
