We feel super-proud of all our students and take an active interest in how they fair after they leave our school. Many go to university to study anything from aerospace engineering, medicine, IT and criminology. Others go down the degree apprenticeship route, especially in professional services such as accountancy and technology – and yet more learn on the job in key areas such as hospitality, sport & leisure, healthcare and sustainability.
Whatever their chosen path, we know that our former students will be well equipped with a strong set of life skills acquired in part from Southborough’s core values of respect, resilience, responsibility and relationships. No matter how hard you work and how well you achieve academically, life, our students are taught, will not always go the way you planned and there will, at times, be unexpected twists and turns. By learning these key values, our students possess the core skills of resilience and adaptability through a combination of emotional, cognitive and practical life skills. In turn, these skills help navigate uncertainty, manage stress - and find a path forward. Once they leave us, Southborough students are more prepared to succeed in life, whatever their chosen pathway.
In recent years, we have welcomed former students back into our school to share their stories with our younger pupils. We’ve had professional artists share their experiences of attending the top art school - and then taking commissions from their first clients once they graduate. We’ve seen students who’ve succeeded in a wide range of professional services -and have shared the ups and downs of working in such high-pressured working environments. We’ve also welcomed others who started ‘small’- and now run their own successful businesses!
We want to keep in touch with more of our former students!
By joining Southborough’s Alumni, our former students will be re-engaging with a school community that once played an important part in shaping them, both academically and personally. They will be given the opportunity to re-connect with old class mates and teachers, swap experiences and once again feel part of a strong, supportive community.
And it would give these young men the perfect opportunity to share their journey and life experiences with our younger students, all of whom would benefit tremendously from listening to what they have to say. Indeed, we understand that it can be hard for any young person to imagine what life after school or college will be. Put simply, you can’t be what you can’t see. And that’s where role models come in. Our former students can play a part in helping young people find and access their path to success.
Do you know of any former students who would like to join our Alumni?
You may have an older son who once went to Southborough? Or a neighbour who attended many years ago? Or even a family friend who, many years ago, once came to our school? Please mention our Alumni to them (or share this article with them?) and if interested, ask them to contact us at Alumni@southborough.kingston.sch.uk
This may be someone’s chance to ‘belong’ again. To re-connect with old friends. To have others listen to their stories and to celebrate their successes with the next generation. Think how rewarding – empowering even – it would be to make a difference to the lives of a younger generation? All they need to do is drop us an email now…
