Eco-Innovation Takes Flight: Southborough Sixth Form Triumphs at Spitalfields Market

The spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and thriving at Southborough High School. Yesterday, our dynamic Sixth Form Young Enterprise team made a spectacular debut at the iconic Spitalfields Market, marking a high-octane start to the 2026 ‘Going to Market’ competition. Competing against 49 other ambitious school teams from across the region, our students stood out not just for their business acumen, but for a product that perfectly bridges nostalgia with 21st-century sustainability.

The Vision: Go Fish World

Trading under the name ‘Go Fish World’, the team has reimagined the classic 1920s card game "Go Fishing" for a modern audience. While the original game remains a beloved staple of family play, the Southborough team identified a gap in the market for a version that is both ethically produced and globally educational.

Their product is a masterclass in eco-conscious manufacturing. Every deck is printed using sustainable methods on recycled materials, ensuring that the fun of the game doesn’t come at the expense of the planet. In a clever nod to modern efficiency and paper reduction, the team has ditched traditional bulky leaflets; instead, a sleek QR code on the box takes users directly to digital instructions.

A Global Education in Your Pocket

The game is structured around four comprehensive sets, each covering a major continent: Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Far beyond a simple matching game, each set explores the rich cultural tapestry of these regions, featuring:

  • Iconic Landmarks
  • Traditional Foods
  • National Sports
  • Native Animals

Research conducted by the team through dedicated focus groups has highlighted the game's versatility. While it is a "marvellous modern twist" on a classic, it has proven to be a powerful educational tool for geography departments and school clubs.

Beyond the Classroom: Social Impact

Perhaps most impressive is the social value ‘Go Fish World’ offers. The team has already attracted significant interest from local care homes specializing in elderly care and dementia support, as the tactile nature of the cards and the familiar gameplay serve as excellent cognitive stimulants. Furthermore, local wellbeing charities have praised the game for its ability to foster social communication skills—offering a much-needed screen-free alternative for children to learn about the world while interacting face-to-face.

Stop the Press!

The buzz at Spitalfields was impossible to ignore. A major national broadsheet newspaper, on the lookout for the "next big thing" in student innovation, spent considerable time at the Southborough stall. Impressed by the team’s professional pitch and the quality of the product, they interviewed the students for an upcoming feature on the future of UK entrepreneurship.

The journey is just beginning. After their successful stint in East London, the team is heading closer to home for the second heat of the competition.
