On Wednesday, a group of Year 10 Southborough students took part in a highly rewarding Jack Petchey workshop. The one full day workshop –led by a Speakers Trust trainer – offered our boys structured, interactive exercises for both individuals and groups to develop communications skills and expand comfort zones. The aim of the workshop was to support students to exceed expectations.

And our students didn’t disappoint!

The Speakers Trust trainer was able to share expert knowledge, insights on overcoming nerves, and teach our boys how to listen and work together to give positive and constructive feedback to each other.

Our guest expert was able to share top tips for speaking in public, before each student was given the time to use all these skills to build their own speech from scratch. Every student taking part was given several opportunities to speak in front of their peers and – by the end of the day –speak out on a topic of their choice, focusing on delivering a message with a positive impact regardless of the subject.

An Assembly Final   - to take place shortly – will give students the chance to share their speech with the school.

Students will perform their speeches to fellow students and teachers, giving our panel of teachers time to hear the variety of topics and styles before selecting which students will represent our school in the Jack Petchey’s ‘Speak Out’ Challenge regional competition, to be held on the 13 March.
